Conkwell Grange is an impressive, private property, nestled in beautiful countryside between Bath and Bradford-on-Avon.The grounds consist of an 8 acre garden, kitchen garden, meadows and over 120 acres of woodland.Under the direction of new owners and an experienced Head Gardener, the garden is undergoing an exciting phase of redesign and development. We are seeking to recruit a passionate and hard working Gardener to join the existing team, and be part of this project from the early stages.We welcome all skills and levels of experience. Above all we are looking for commitment, enthusiasm and professionalism, a passion for plants and gardening, a strong work ethic and a desire to learn and develop as a skilled horticulturalist. We value a high standard of work and attention to detail and an appreciation of design and the garden aesthetic.A good level of physical fitness is required and a willingness to work outside in all weathers. Some landscaping work and heavy lifting will be an aspect of the role throughout these early stages of the garden development. Being comfortable with the household dogs is also essential.We have a good range of equipment and machinery. General confidence with machinery is necessary but specific training will be given where required. A chainsaw certificate is not a requirement of this role.The work is varied and shared by a team of four Gardeners and the Head Gardener, each of whom contribute different skills and experience. We wish to cultivate a happy working environment with a spirit of collaboration and teamwork. Good communication, and a willingness to learn and listen and take instruction is essential.The garden is a mix of informal and formal areas but very natural, with opportunity for a diversity of planting. It is managed organically and we plan to produce our own compost and grow cutting flowers and fruit and vegetables for the house. We are also incorporating lots of new roses and topiary, so a passion for specialist pruning is desirable.This is an exciting opportunity to play an integral part in all aspects of a creative project during its development, as well as the ongoing maintenance of a beautiful garden where good horticultural practice and expertise is valued. Also a great chance to develop skills and knowledge and professionalism.This vacancy is for a full time position but candidates wishing to work part time, will be considered.
