Hereford BID is looking for a reliable, practical and proactive Handyperson / Outdoor Maintenance Operative to help keep public areas in Hereford city centre clean, tidy and welcoming for businesses, visitors and shoppers.
This is a varied, hands-on outdoor role in a busy city centre environment. You will play an important part in helping the area look its best throughout the week, while also supporting seasonal projects and events. The role would suit a self-starter who takes pride in high standards, notices the detail and works well without close supervision.
You will also need to be friendly, approachable and professional, as the role involves occasional contact with businesses across the city centre.
Main Duties
Duties are likely to include:
- Street cleaning and environmental maintenance in public areas
- Chewing gum and graffiti removal
- Jet washing and cleaning hard surfaces
- Cleaning windows and doorways of empty premises
- Cleaning corners and areas not easily reached by larger cleansing equipment
- Watering hanging baskets, planters and floral displays
- Light gardening and public realm upkeep
- Minor repairs and painting
- Installing hanging basket brackets
- Supporting the set-up of gazebos, stages and other equipment for events
- Reporting more serious damage, vandalism or maintenance issues to management
- Occasional leaflet and newsletter distribution to BID businesses
- Maintaining positive day-to-day relations with businesses in the BID area
Person Specification
Essential
- Minimum 2 years’ experience of working outdoors
- Good DIY and practical maintenance skills
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
- Friendly, approachable and professional manner
- Good attention to detail and pride in maintaining high standards
- Ability to work safely and responsibly in public areas
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Flexible approach to duties and working hours
- Ability to communicate confidently and courteously with local businesses when required
Desirable
- Experience of street cleaning, grounds maintenance, repairs or similar work
- Experience of working in a public-facing role
- Understanding of the difference between public and private property
- Full UK driving licence
Working at Height and Training
The role will occasionally involve working at height on ladders, for example when installing hanging basket brackets. Full training will be provided.
Hours of Work
- 25 hours per week
- Usually worked across 3 or 4 days per week
- Normal start time around 7am or 8am
- During spring and summer, watering duties may require 5am starts
- Occasional Saturday and Sunday work required
- Some evening work may be required from time to time to support events
Holiday
- 4 weeks’ holiday plus statutory holidays pro rata
