To provide maintenance, health and safety, and site support services within the nursery, ensuring a safe, clean, secure, and welcoming environment for children, staff, parents, and visitors. The role supports the smooth day-to-day operation of the nursery by carrying out routine maintenance, repairs, and grounds upkeep.
Key ResponsibilitiesMaintenance and Repairs
- Carry out routine maintenance tasks throughout the nursery building and outdoor areas.
- Undertake minor repairs, including basic plumbing, painting, decorating, carpentry, and general handyman duties.
- Identify and report maintenance issues requiring specialist contractors.
- Ensure all equipment, furniture, fixtures, and fittings are safe and in good working order.
- Conduct regular inspections of play equipment and outdoor learning environments.
Health and Safety
- Support compliance with health and safety regulations and nursery policies.
- Complete routine health and safety checks and maintain accurate records.
- Ensure fire exits, emergency equipment, and evacuation routes remain clear and accessible.
- Assist with fire drills and emergency procedures as required.
- Report hazards, accidents, or potential risks promptly to management.
Grounds and Environment
- Maintain outdoor play areas, gardens, pathways, and car park areas.
- Ensure the nursery premises remain clean, tidy, and free from hazards.
- Carry out seasonal maintenance such as leaf clearing, gritting pathways, and basic gardening tasks.
- Assist in setting up outdoor learning spaces and equipment.
Security
- Support the security of the premises by monitoring gates, fences, locks, and alarm systems.
- Open and secure the nursery building as required.
- Liaise with contractors and service providers while ensuring safeguarding procedures are followed.
General Support
- Assist with deliveries, furniture assembly, and room setup when required.
- Support sustainability initiatives and waste management procedures.
- Work collaboratively with nursery staff to ensure a positive environment for children.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties consistent with the role.
Person SpecificationEssential
- Experience in general building maintenance, caretaking, or facilities support.
- Basic skills in repairs, decorating, and grounds maintenance.
- Understanding of health and safety practices.
- Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Reliable, trustworthy, and flexible approach to work.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
Desirable
- Previous experience working in a school, nursery, or childcare setting.
- Relevant maintenance, facilities, or trade qualifications.
- Knowledge of COSHH, fire safety, and risk assessment procedures.
- First Aid qualification.
