Job title: Grounds Maintenance Operative
Based at: Newmarket.
Contract type: Permanent
Hours: 40 hours per week (annualised hours – 45 hours in Summer/35 hours in winter)
About the role
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Grounds Maintenance Operative to join our Newmarket team to deliver the day-to-day care of the grounds and gardens managed by Jockey Club Estates (JCE) maintaining high presentation standards. This role will include a range of practical tasks to develop, improve and look after the areas across JCE and contribute to the delivery of projects.

The Grounds Maintenance Operative will
- Assist the grounds team in all aspects of grounds and garden maintenance across multiple sites.
- Lawn care such as mowing, strimming, irrigation, aeration, scarifying and fertiliser treatments.
- Undertake all aspects of continued plant and shrub care: Planting, watering, feeding, pruning, including flowers beds, baskets, containers, formal hedging, shrubs and trees.
- Assist with preparing and replanting seasonal bedding displays to the best horticultural practices.
- Safely operate a variety of horticultural machine and equipment such as hedge
- cutters, strimmers, ride on mowers.
- Have experience of routine maintenance such as litter collection, weeding, leaf clearing and sweeping.
- Assist with pest control: Identifying and treating pests and diseases that affect
- plants.
- Be fully equipped with working PPE and ensure appropriate manual handling processes are followed.
About you
- Driving licence is essential.
- Knowledge of raising plants and associated glasshouse activities
- Good knowledge of plant care, including planting, deadheading, watering, feeding and
- pruning.
- Ability to work under pressure to continually deliver high standards.
- PA1 & PA6 qualification and experience in regular spraying
- Experience of basic tractor drawn equipment
- Understanding of Health and Safety in the workplace
- Basic tractor driving experience, machinery operation
