Position: Drainage Specialist / Trencher Operator
Location: South Wales (projects across Wales & England)
Pay: £14–£17 per hour (equivalent to £35,000–£42,500 per year, based on approximately 2,500 hours annually)
Contract: Full-time contracting position Please note - A full Clean UK Driving Licence, CSCS & SSSTS Card is required for you to be considered for this position.

Chappell Enterprises UK is recruiting on behalf of our client, a leading sports turf contractor renowned for their excellence in natural turf sports surfaces. Due to continued growth, they are seeking a dedicated and skilled Drainage Specialist / Trencher Operator to join their team.
About Our Client:
Our client is one of the UK's most respected sports turf contractors, with a proud history spanning several decades. They specialise in the renovation, construction, and maintenance of natural turf sports surfaces, working with clients ranging from grassroots clubs to elite-level football and rugby teams across Wales and England.
About the Role:
As a Drainage Specialist / Trencher Operator, you will be responsible for operating specialist machinery to install precision drainage systems on natural turf sports surfaces. This role involves working closely with site managers and team leaders to ensure efficient, high-quality installations that meet project specifications. Regular travel and overnight stays are required, with accommodation provided.
Key Responsibilities: - Operating drainage trenching machinery and associated plant
- Installing primary and secondary sports turf drainage systems to design specifications
- Laying and connecting lateral pipes, mainlines, and outfalls
- Performing trench backfilling and surface reinstatement work
- Carrying out daily machinery checks, cleaning, and maintenance
- Working closely with site supervisors to coordinate workflow and ensure project deadlines are met
Requirements:
Essential: - Proven experience operating trenchers and related plant equipment
- Strong understanding of drainage installation techniques and safe working practices
- Practical, hands-on approach and willingness to assist with manual work
- Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work as part of a team
- Full UK driving licence essential
Desirable: - Background in sports turf, groundworks, or agricultural drainage
- Machine tickets such as CPCS or NPORS are advantageous but not essential
