The role
Estate Services sits at the very heart of Southern Housing, often forming the first – and most frequent – impression our residents have of us. Our grounds and communal spaces play a vital role in creating safe, welcoming neighbourhoods, and we’re looking for a committed and hands-on Grounds Maintenance Supervisor to help us deliver services our residents can be proud of.
Working closely with the Grounds Maintenance Manager, you’ll support the delivery of a high-quality, value-for-money grounds maintenance service across a defined geographical area. You’ll lead by example on the ground, supervising teams, monitoring standards, and stepping up to cover management responsibilities when required. With a strong focus on quality, safety and sustainability, you’ll help identify opportunities to enhance our estates in line with Southern Housing’s Biodiversity Toolkit, while ensuring service delivery consistently meets our high standards.
This is a varied, frontline role for someone who enjoys balancing practical grounds maintenance work with people leadership, inspections, and collaboration with contractors and colleagues – all with the shared goal of improving resident satisfaction and the places they call home.
What you’ll need
- Experience of working in a Ground Maintenance environment, with a strong understanding of health and safety practices, including conducting risk assessments, adhering to COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations, managing lone working situations, and prioritising the safety of the team.
- Proven experience of practical grounds maintenance tasks.
- A proactive mindset and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve operational challenges or issues that may arise within the Estate Services team.
- An understanding of value for money and service charges, recognising the importance of optimising resources and delivering cost-effective services. This includes identifying opportunities for efficiencies.
- The ability to build and maintain positive relationships with residents, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and a customer-centric approach. This includes effectively addressing resident inquiries, concerns, and complaints, and working collaboratively to ensure their needs are met.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, enabling you to effectively liaise with team members, residents, contractors, and other stakeholders.
- Attention to detail to conduct thorough estate inspections and report on necessary repairs, compliance, or tenancy matters.
In your supporting statement, it is important that you address how you meet each of the above criteria providing real examples.

Inclusion and Diversity
We work hard to create a diverse and inclusive culture and environment where people are respected for who they are. Encouraging inclusion is not just about protected characteristics, it’s about celebrating differences of thought, opinion, experience and perspective of each individual. We’re all different in our own way and we want our colleagues to feel comfortable, that they belong, and are safe to be themselves at work, without fear of being judged or excluded, but valued for their contribution to our One Team approach.
